‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ Exclusive: Jude Law Opens Up About His Character’s Questionable Intentions, “Is He Good?”

Last week, Disney+ surprised fans by announcing fans will get to watch Lucasfilm’s thrilling new adventure series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew early, with the first two episodes now premiering on Monday, December 2, at 6:00 p.m. PST.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew follows the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way home—and meeting unlikely allies and enemies—will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.

The series stars Jude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon and Nick Frost. GlobalGrind Sr. Content Director Janeé Bolden chatted with Jude Law ahead of the series premiere about his mysterious new character, working with four young actors, what he’s learned from his 30 year career and more.
Law’s character Jod Na Nawood enters the story under the guise of a helper, but it’s clear from the start that he’s not who the kids presume him to be.
“That is the fun of it,” Law told GlobalGrind about playing such an enigmatic role. “And he remains mysterious. You’ll see that he’s known by different names and people have very different reactions to him. I think if I were to describe him, I’d say he’s a survivor… Quick-witted, multifaceted, contradictory — but is he good?”
That certainly remains to be seen, but we were eager to learn more about what exactly Jod is doing with the four young heroes, Wim, Neel, Fern and KB. When Jod discovers the foursome, they’re facing pretty dire consequences for wandering beyond their home planet. Jod offers his help, but only because he recognizes opportunity when it comes knocking.
“Opportunity!That’s the word,” Law said. “What I loved about the writing was the kids give as good as they get. They manipulate him too. They get what they need out of him. It’s kind of a game of wits, like who will cave first? I love that Jod doesn’t really see them as children. I had this image idea in my head that he never really had a childhood, that his childhood was somehow snatched from him, coming out of quite a desperate place, in a desperate time and that the children therefore aren’t children to him. They’re just small adults and he expects them to keep up and deliver. So that’s sort of at the heart of that relationship, which like you said — Is it a blessing? Is it not?”
Fortunately, Law has a softer heart than his character and he was quick to sing the praises of his young costars, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter and Robert Timothy Smith.
“They were remarkable quite honestly,” Law told GlobalGrind. “They had a huge amount of work to do and were very proficient young actors and really delivered when they had to deliver, but they’re kids and they were fun and they made it fun and joyous and pleasurable and playful, which I think is pretty important in a piece like this. It kept it very refreshed.”
Because the plot is being built around children who are on a quest, many audiences will elements from projects like The Goonies and Stranger Things in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
“I thought it was a wonderful part of the concept, to not just to put children in the protagonist roles and therefore see the universe through their eyes, both innocent, fearful, or inspired — but also to really draw on that 80’s Amblin storytelling where those children are at fault and they’ve got good relationships and bad relationships,” Law said. “They’re very three dimensional, they’re rounded, authentic kids and in the spirit of those wonderful adventures from the ’80s of Spielberg and Zemeckis, I just thought that was a wonderful crossover and that the two worlds fit very nicely together and I hope that young people see. Young people are kind of digging that sort of tone themselves with Stranger Things. i think they’ll sit and recognize it and I hope they like it. And I certainly hope the parents, my generation, recognize those things that we all grew up watching and loving.”

Episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew are directed by Jon Watts, David Lowery, the Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) Jake Schreier, Bryce Dallas Howard and Lee Isaac Chung. Jon Watts and Christopher Ford are the head writers and also serve as executive producers along with Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy and Colin Wilson. Chris Buongiorno, Karen Gilchrist and Carrie Beck are the co-executive producers, and Susan McNamara and John Bartnicki are the producers.
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premieres Monday, December 2, at 6:00 p.m. PST, exclusively on Disney+. Subsequent episodes will continue to stream on Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. PST for the remainder of the season.
