BOSSIP’s contributor Liz Smith caught up with some of the show’s heavy hitters on the red carpet to get an inside look at what fans can expect for Season Two.

“What separates the best from others, especially on this show, is knowing who you are and being able to convey that through your music because hip hop is so much about your story, where you’re from, the life you live,” said Executive Producer John Legend. “Being able to take that story and make music from it, music people can feel and connect to—I feel our winner is going to be able to do that!”

Executive producer Jesse Collins also weighed in on the judging panel for the new season:

“We were looking for a diverse group, a lot of fun, people who really represent the culture and love hip hop through and through. Mike Jackson, one of our EPs, is very picky about these things, but we’re really happy with who decided to join us. They’re all great, and I think everyone is going to love them!”

Dionne Harmon, another executive producer, highlighted the unique challenges of creating a sophomore season:

“Season two is always more of a challenge than season one. People know about it, so you’ve got to weed through all the people that are coming to be on TV and find those who authentically want to be an artist and bring themselves without the drama. To me, that’s the hardest part!”
