Roommates, according to recently filed court documents, Naya Rivera’s ex-husband Ryan Dorsey has officially filed a wrongful death lawsuit citing that the boat she was in before her untimely death being unsafe. Dorsey is now filing that lawsuit on behalf of Naya Rivera’s young son, who was with her when she tragically drowned this past summer.
Ryan Dorsey claims that Ventura County is responsible for Naya Rivera’s death because the boat that she and her son Josey were on in Lake Piru didn’t comply with safety standards.
In court documents, Dorsey claims the boat was “not equipped with a safely accessible ladder, adequate rope, an anchor, a radio or any security mechanisms to prevent swimmers from being separated from their boats, nor any flotation or lifesaving devices” in violation of California law.
He also alleged the boat drifted away from Naya and her son when they jumped into the lake for a swim and proper safety equipment could have prevented that.
The lawsuit further states that the boat was “rocking back and forth forcefully in the current and wind.” In the lawsuit, Ryan Dorsey says that there were no signs warning of the dangerous conditions of the lake—and the person who rented the boat to Naya didn’t warn her to wear the life vest that came with the boat.
As we previously reported, Naya Rivera’s body was found floating in the northeast area of Lake Piru, five days after authorities declared her missing. She had previously gone to the lake and rented a pontoon boat with her 4-year-old son, Josey.
Her son was later found sleeping by himself on the boat by another boater who made the initial 911 call. Naya was nowhere to be found but authorities reported they found one life jacket on the boat and Josey wearing another.
