The Wilson’s have always been vocal about helping out when it comes to the youth, and in their latest venture, they are helping to fund a charter school in the Seattle area.
According to the Associated Press, they will be helping to fund an already existing charter school program named Cascade Midway Academy. They will be funding through their Why Not You Foundation, and they will be providing about $1.75 million to help rebrand.
The Cascade high school program was scheduled to open this year; however, the pandemic caused the founders Garth Reeves and Scott Canfield to push back the opening. In need of funding, they reached out to the Wilson’s foundation.
Canfield said due to Ciara and Russell’s donation, they will be honored by having the school’s name changed to the Why Not You Academy. However, it was made clear that the Wilson’s will not be involved with the everyday operations at the school.
When speaking about their decision to fund the school, Ciara and Russell said that they admired that the school focused on “academics, personalized student plans, and internships and mentorships for underserved Black and brown students.”
Ciara added, “I’m really confident…about the team that we have here and how we’re building things out. We’re passionate about everything. We’re all in on this.”
The Why Not You Academy is now scheduled to open in the fall of 2021.
As many of you already know, Russell plays for the Seattle Seahawks, and the couple also have a home in the city as well.
